The technical name for keyhole gallstone surgery is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy where a series of small cuts are made in the abdomen and fine surgical instruments are used to perform surgery.

Most Cholecystectomy operations are carried out by this method and is a preference to operating using open surgery as it is far less invasive, however the operation is not without risk. During the procedure the cystic artery and cystic duct need clipping while the gall bladder is peeled from the bed of the liver. This is where injury can occur causing serious problems to the main bile ducts.
